Fear

What is fear? According to the dictionary, fear is the anticipation of the possibility that something unpleasant will occur. So the question should be, why do we anticipate something unpleasant occurring without out even considering the possibility that something will go right. And therefore, risks are too risky, challenges are too challenging, uncertainty brings doubt, and doubt gives birth to absence. Fear can choke out the very existence of a dream differed. The dreams differed no longer exist because it has been left too long unattended and life ceases to exist. Too many people have falling prey to its lies, while fear becomes a Venus fly trap sucking out the existence of life. Trapping you with its grip while draining the very essence of hope.

Fear is false evidence appearing real. It appears as if what you are hoping for, may not even happen. Perhaps because, you have played over in your head all the no’s you heard. Or maybe you replay over and over all the times you have tried something and failed. Hope is fading, you feel yourself fainting. So you try one more time and……..same result… and so you quit. Google states that “Thomas Edison failed over 1000 times at attempting the light bulb. His teachers said that he was too stupid to learn anything. Not only that, according to google, he was fired from his first two jobs for being non-productive.” If you were to meet him today, you would probably say the same thing. He didn’t allow fear, doubt, or uncertainty to stop him. I’m sure he felt all those emotions, but, he did not give into the lie that appeared to be real. With constant ridicule he pushed. He pressed until something happened! Will Smith stated “Fear is a product of our imagination, causing us to fear things that do not at present and may not ever exist. That is near insanity. Do not misunderstand me, danger is very real, but, fear is a choice. We are all telling ourselves a story and that day mine changed.” So what did Edison and Smith have in common: Faith!

What is faith? The dictionary states that faith is belief that is not based on proof. The Bible says faith is the substance of things hoped for with evidence not seen. There are many references in the Bible to men and women who walked by Faith. But, what about in today’s society. Do they still talk about Faith? Well let’s see, outside of Pastors, there are many that go by the principles of Faith. Here are a few examples: Steve Harvey and Tyler Perry.  They both go by Faith and putting hard work into believing what they want to achieve. As Steve Harvey quoted James 2:17 “In the same way, faith by itself it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” In other words, if you believe something can be, but, you don’t even put forth the effort to make it a reality makes it dead. The absence of work makes your belief null in void. Talk is cheap, you have heard this saying I am sure. That is because, it costs nothing to say what you are going to do, but, it will cost much to go after what you want. Tyler Perry is quoted in saying, “I am a Christian, I am a believer, and I know had I not been a person of faith, I couldn’t be here in this place, and I wouldn’t be walking the path that I’m on now.” Both men have faced adversity, fear, doubt, and uncertainty. I’m sure they have had many failures. They say that without those risks accompanied with faith, they wouldn’t have made it.

Steve Harvey and Tyler Perry have both said “Do not despise small beginnings.” The problem is too many people are having that microwave faith and expecting things to come into fruition instantaneously. This kind of thinking is dangerous and can set you up for failure. There is a process and rhythm to everything. Stay the course of your process while finding that rhythm to success and stay focused. Focus simply means to concentrate on the task at hand. If you are not focused distractions can come in and throw everything off. Distractions can be anything. It can be your family, your job, people who have an opinion, even people’s silence can become a distraction. In order to avoid distractions, you have to keep your main objective in view at all times. Not all things happen overnight. Many things we have to work at to get what we want. Faith in God, that He will help you through and guide you every step of the way is key. As Tyler Perry stated, “We plant and water, but, God brings the increase.” And when we feel those lonely moments, those trying times when it gets too hard and it feels like God is not there…..just know that He is! He said in His Word that He would never leave us or forsake us. As the movie God’s Not Dead Two stated, “The teacher is always quite during a test.”

Remember fear is a counterfeit version of Faith. It is time to see through different eyes. Where you would have said the glass is half empty, see the glass as half full. You will go far if only you believe it is possible! As the movie The Good Dinosaur says, “You have to get through your fear, to see the beauty on the other side.”
